The Small World Machines

Coca-Cola created with Leo Burnett agency a couple of pairing vending machines that allow customers to interact with the people standing in front of the matching machine. The connection is both visual and tactile. To create this Coca-Cola equipped the vending machines with cameras and a touchscreen: “We used special active-shutter 3-D technology that projected a streaming feed onto glass while filming through that glass at the same time,” explains Leo Burnett Executive Creative Director Jon Wyville. “This allowed people to make direct eye contact and touch hands.”

The tricky part was to create a system where people don’t get out of the picture. The common problem while using Skype is that people look more at the camera than at the person they’re talking to. So they came up with the idea of a touch screen that would display images at the same time.
